Gulf Savannah Region
This is composed of the towns of Karumba, which penetrates the gulf through labyrinthine mangroves; Burketown, which is the Gulf area’s earliest town; and Croydon, which was historically, a gold mining town.
This region is home to Lawn Hill National Park, which features gorges with 60-meter walls made of sandstone, and lush growth and wildlife like wallabies, bats and pythons. The park also features the Riversleigh Fossil Field.
Mission Beach
Mission beach boasts of a beach lined with palm trees and covered with golden sand. The Great Barrier Reef and Dunk Island provide spectacular views as well as venues for snorkeling, diving, rafting and fishing. Among the thousands of plant species are hibiscus, caliphillum, paw paws, and lawyer cane. The rare Cassowary bird also inhabits this area.
