Weipa and Kowanyama
These two towns are populated by large aboriginal communities. The Aboriginal Shell Mounds, the local marine and land wildlife as well as ideal fishing sites are worthy of a visit to these towns.
Cooktown
Cooktown is a small port on Cape York Peninsula, where the Great Barrier Reef, the northern tropical rainforests and the Outback converge. It is also a frontier town, providing the first settlement for Europeans in Australia before the nation’s birth. It was named after the historic Captain James Cook who resided in the town before informing England of his discovery of the land. Among the attractions of the town are the James Cook Museum, the mythical Black Mountains and the Endeavour River as well as the Palmer River, or Australia’s River of Gold.
Being the northern entry to the Great Barrier Reef, diving and fishing is also of note in Cooktown.
